After bombing in the U.S., Warcraft just became the highest-grossing video game film in history

Forget Resident Evil and Tomb Raider — there’s a new video game film at the top of the heap.
The international box office has increasingly become more important over the past decade, and with Warcraft, we might have finally reached the tipping point. Duncan Jones’ big-screen adaptation of the World of Warcraft video game series was an utter failure in the U.S., pulling in just over $38 million. But internationally (specifically China)? It’s a juggernaut, earning almost $340 million to date.
To put that into perspective: The film’s U.S. box-office haul has accounted for just 10 percent of the film’s returns, with the vast majority of cash and success coming from China. According to The Verge, Warcraft had the biggest debut of a foreign-language film in the country's history, scoring $156 million in its first five days.
In relation to other films based on video games, Warcraft edged out 2010’s Prince of Persia ($336 million worldwide), The Angry Birds Movie ($327 million worldwide), Resident Evil: Afterlife ($296 million worldwide) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider ($274 million). All while proving to be an utter disaster domestically.
With the film on track to top $400 million total, it seems a sequel is possibly inevitable. For a tentpole event film to even be in that conversation, after pulling in less than $40 million in the U.S., is a testament to how important the international market has become. Welcome to the future?
